BRETT NETSON - CLARKE AND THE HIMSELFS - BODEGA SUSHI LIVE!

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH!

Clarke and the Himselfs

music: https://clarkeandthehimselfs.bandcamp.com

website: www.clarkeandthehimselfs.com

Clarke and the Himselfs smack of alchemy, that seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, and combination. Performing live with a drumstick in hand, guitar strings under the thumb, vocals that cut right to the point with a Moe Tucker rhythm laid underneath, Clarke Aleksandr Howell takes basement rock fuzz, pop precision, molten neo-psych, weirdo gutter punk, and reorganizes them into something compact, bright and sharp, much like the sonic equivalent of highly organized carbon, or what is commonly known as a diamond.

The Himselfs tour frequently and have played throughout the States as well as overseas, where they have a particularly big following in Russia. She has opened for Built to Spill on two different tours, and shared the stage with Sam Coomes, Caustic Resin, Colleen Green, No Bunny, Paleo, Sad Horse, La Luz, Naomi Punk, among others.

The Himselfs’ newest LP, Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends, features, for the first time on record, a full band in addition to Clarke himself. Boise friends Demmi Netson, Otis Crook, William Bendler, Brittany McConnell and Brett Netson together explore a dreamier, darker realm with Clarke, music in the same nebula but on different, neighboring stars. Preceding And Friends was the late 2015 release of a critically acclaimed effort that came from the collaboration between Clarke and David Strackany, The Well-Rounded Clarke and the Himselfs. Both records were released by Scavenger Cult Records, an all Analog Label Collective of which Howell and Brett Netson are both founding members.

After suffering from depression for years, driving cross country on off days on tour dressed as a woman, mourning the deaths of both friends and family, Clarke decided it was time for a change and recently came out with her longstanding battle with gender dysphoria. As she recently intimated, “My current mission in life, the biggest way I can stand for something, the best protest I have, is to be true to what I believe in and be a transgender woman playing music for people in a band called Clarke and the Himselfs.

Magic. Transformation. Creation. Combination.

Indeed.

Brett Netson

music: https://brettnetson.bandcamp.com/

Spawned in Idaho’s Great Basin/Snake River Plain, Brett Netson specializes in heavy, psychedelic, lowdown rock and roll guitar/DMT therapist, Having served as an industrial grade force multiplier to the likes of Built to Spill,EARTH and cult rock outfit, Caustic Resin. Netson joined Mark Lanegan’s touring band through 2005, hitting Europe and the US West Coast once or twice a year. Netson has also appeared on a few of Lanegan’s albums and EPs, as well as albums from Mike Johnson and the Evildoers, Helvetia, the Delusions and others. More recently, Netson appeared as a second guitarist on Earth’s critically acclaimed album, Primitive and Deadly, and Nate Hall’s (USX) solo release, Electric Vacuum Roar and on the soon to be released Drought Stick by Gridfailure and Earth, Live at Third Man Records.

"Displaying a wilder, darker, more hedonistic sound than Built To Spill, Caustic Resin released six metal, space rock and psychedelia influenced albums between 1993 and 2003. Among them is 1998's The Medicine Is All Gone, a hallucinogenic, heavy guitar album almost without equal, a masterpiece of stoner rock that has been re-issued on scavengercult.bandcamp.com in a Mil-Spec, analog mastered, gatefold 180g. keep it till you die style.

With the latest incarnation of the Netsonian under world exploration, he has scaled it down with the recent acquisition of the Moog Taurus bass synth pedal unit. Massive bass waves and stereo guitar, enabling a nimble path of navigation through the collective unconscious terrain. Songs, riffs and ambient pineal gland hyper stimulation. Some therapeutic, DMT, lizard brain shit. With melodies"

“Despite the obvious roots, Netson obviously has no interest in recycling hoary Neil Young country-rock clichés. Rather, he seems bent on using hard rock to destroy itself. From his vocal approach, Netson seems to have a love/hate relationship with ’70s fixtures such as Ozzy Osbourne, Roger Waters, and Jethro Tull, who both inform the sound and provide something for it to react against.” – Dusted Magazine

"The other longest standing member of Built To Spill is their jaw dropping guitar talent Brett Netson. Featured on their 1993 debut, plus 1997's defining Perfect From Now On and many tours and albums throughout the band's existence, Netson flitted in and out of the group at times when not concentrating on his own band (s) Snakes, Reversion and Caustic Resin."

NAOMI PUNK RETURNS TO TOTAL DRAG!!

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND!

Their 1st time around at Total Drag remains to be one of our favorite shows we've ever had, get excited....

NAOMI PUNK

The 25 tracks on ‘Yellow,’ conceived as a 2XLP double album from day one, were self-recorded steadily throughout 2015-2017 at various locations. Much of the material was derived from what the group called ‘The Scorpion Suite’, a state of mind reached only by the alternative version of Naomi Punk they call ‘The Scorpions’ (disambiguated). Many ‘Scorpion Sessions’ were conducted by The Scorpions, each member performing their predetermined roll in a project half-aspiring to the register of licensing music, half-aspiring to musical novelty.

The self-referential musical language of The Feeling (2012) was wrung out into the starker, live-informed Television Man (2014). On ‘Yellow’ this language becomes a means, not an end.

Integrated into the album are glimpses of live recordings, sounds of equipment being pushed around, hard rock sample libraries, sounds of the flapping wings of the album’s host (“I Found My Angel Wings” is embedded in thematic variation throughout), windy field recordings, emulsive synthetic woodwinds, a busted car stereo, a few four-track acoustic ballads, and more than a few puzzles and jokes.

Yellow begins with two introductions. The first sound of the record is a sample of a bass guitar, an instrument that those familiar with Naomi Punk will know doesn’t exist in their lineup. The stage is set with alien props.

The pair ‘Cookie’ and ‘Cardboard’ are hot off the assembly line culminations of the prototypes designed by ‘Television Man.’ They are exceedingly agile pop constructions with drumwork designed to throw off the bots, and guitars assimilated into the machinations of Coster’s notably present, proto-philosophical spoken verse. This is CGI Beefheart resurrected in post-production for a few scenes.

‘Tiger Pipe’ demands the user, “destroy all money.”

Much of the record conjures this notion of the undoing of 'society', at least in a western societal sense, and its supercession via the natural world; the revenge of Mother Earth.

‘Gotham Brake’ illustrates this particular crux of ‘Yellow’ in an interesting way -- a requiem for humankind's 'harmonious' relationship to the natural world. Industrialized society has reached a level of atrophy so severe that it must be completely dismantled. Walden's Cesspool. 'Gotham' is an advocation for a new way forward. The fourth way. You can hear the sounds of the gears shifting, wheels turning. A narrator’s voice steps in then and again from the vantage of Mother Earth. Breaking out of the stasis.

‘Scorpion Glue’ is a chimera of many of the species encountered in ‘Yellow.’ Its contorted guitars and drums are tangled with synthetic mirrored versions of themselves, in dialogue, neither coming to primacy.

On first listen ‘Chains’ appears like a monolith in the darkness of side-C. On repeat listens its stark minimalism is revealed to be almost crystalline in form, shifting chords beading against a vantablack passacaglia, a trio for the end of time. Coster drags us into the grinding chorus in androgynous deadpan: “Ecology … doesn’t follow your system … so I’m chasin’ … chasin’ my dreams.”

If Rock and Pop music are instruments of the Neoliberal period, then they must be repurposed and reorganized. Not just formally, but politically. Coincidentally, the structure of ‘Yellow’ (in spite of the so-called difficulty of its 2xLP format) is no different than recent confessional documents from Frank Ocean, Solange, Kendrick, etc., thus owing much more to the Pop format than its length would suggest. 'Rock' and 'Punk' have become so conservative that they are rendering themselves obsolete as they fail to provide new ideas and solutions for anything other than 'self-expression' and fake posturing. The ‘Yellow’ structure constructs a three-dimensional listening experience, and while it does not pretend to know all the answers, it at the very least (and perhaps most importantly) posits a serious alternative.

Naomi Punk are from Olympia, Washington.

THE COURTNEYS RETURN ON HALLOWEEN!

IT'S A HALLOWEEN PARTY AT TOTAL DRAG!

The Courtneys drift back to the sound of the early '90s, drawing from strong influences including Teenage Fanclub, Pavement, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and The Clean. Courtney Loove's dreamy guitar riffs add a timeless powerpop element to the punk backbone formed by Sydney Koke's driving basslines, while drummer/lead singer Jen Twynn Payne delivers heartfelt lyrics with a powerful vocal style. These components come together through a passionate collaborative songwriting process to deliver a special blend of fuzzy "artisanal grunge."

The first, eponymous Courtneys album came out in 2013 on small independent label, Hockey Dad Records, based in the band's hometown of Vancouver, BC, Canada. They have since worked with a number of independent labels including Conquest of Noise in Australia and Waterslide Records in Japan, as well as Burger Records and Gnar tapes in the USA. They have released a number of singles and music videos, and toured throughout Canada and the USA, including spots supporting Tegan and Sara and Mac Demarco.

In 2015 The Courtneys made their way to Australia and New Zealand, where they were hosted by Flying Nun Records. Influenced by the legendary label from early on, the group are honored to now be able to call it their home.

SIMON JOYNER LIVE AT TOTAL DRAG!

SIMON JOYNER LIVE AT TOTAL DRAG!

THURSDAY AUGUST 17TH!
Simon Joyner is a renowned American singer-songwriter who first came
to prominence during the Lo-Fi movement of the early 90's alongside
contemporaries mining similar territory like Will Oldham, Peter
Jefferies, the Mountain Goats, and Bill Callahan. Joyner
was championed early by the late British DJ, John Peel, who famously
played Joyner's 1994 LP, "The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll", start
to finish on one of his BBC programs, initially making Joyner more
well known overseas than in his own country. He is often referred to as one
of the forefathers of the Omaha music scene and an influence on his
friend, Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes.

Following the mercurial path of heroes like Neil Young and Bob Dylan,
Joyner has been releasing literate and challenging albums
since the release of his first album, Room Temperature, in 1993. His
discography includes twenty-two full-length recordings and numerous
singles and guest appearances. A book of his lyrics was released in
2016 under the title "Only Love Can Bring You Peace: Selected Lyrics
(1990-2014)." He tours the United States and Europe semi-regularly and
is the co-owner of the Grapefruit
Records label which operates from offices in Brooklyn, NY and Omaha, NE.

• QUOTES •

"Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller's dark emotional
mirror, Townes Van Zandt's three-chord moan, and Lou Reed's warehouse
minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner." — Gillian Welch

"Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time. He
has shades of all the greats (Van Zandt, Cohen, Dylan) but exists in a
space all his own ... He truly is an American songwriting treasure. It
is my hope that more people will discover his music and share in the
unique joy that it brings." — Conor Oberst

"Simon's always been a secret handshake amongst me and my peers. He's
a pioneer. He's helped pave the way for many people, myself included.
He's an artist in its purest form--for his only concern is crafting a
perfect song--which he's done time and time again." ---Kevin Morby

DAVID NANCE AT TOTAL DRAG!

SUNDAY AUGUST 6TH!

David Nance, Omaha veteran of warble and hiss, returns with Negative Boogie, his new concoction of chug, throb and greasy swagger. For Boogie, Nance trades in his beaten up Tascam 488 for the bullet-proof,

glass walls of A.R.C. Studios. Where else can you brew the negative

boogie? And what exactly is the negative boogie? Well, it's a bit like

Canned Heat but with Pere Ubu's queasy rhythms and someone playing

five finger fillet with Swell Maps. Ensconced in his ivory tower

and soundproof rooms, Nance reached for unlikely weapons to tear down

his own lofty experiment. He had his pick of rare guitars, cowbells,

steel drums, vintage amps, Crazy Horse microphones, mellotron, and the

restless but indefatigable rhythm section of Kevin Donahue and Tom

May. They started at sunrise and recorded 15 songs by midnight. Maybe

it's his Midwestern work ethic, maybe he's a sonic cheapskate. Maybe

it's just the sound of negative boogie.

"Be leery of any punk band with initial ambitions that go beyond just playing shows with their friends. Sure, great bands ascend beyond basements and handmade demos all the time, but the best acts start with little consideration for the outside world. The groups are their own insular worlds, where the reward comes from the process, not accolades and riches. And the bands that thrive on their own artistic satisfaction usually wind up being the bands that are able to grow beyond the donation jar into sustainable successful musical careers. Their charisma is contagious, their songs exist outside of fads, and their spirits can weather the inevitable ups and downs of life as touring musicians. Such is the case with the Atlanta trio The Coathangers.

When The Coathangers started up in 2006, their aspirations were humble. “I think all bands in their early twenties start for fun,” says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel when talking about their early years of cheeky no-wave and irreverent garage rock. But Julia and her bandmates Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) and Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals) were serious about their craft, and that combination of modest outside expectations and absolute dedication to their music made for exhilarating live shows and contagious records. Ten years later, The Coathangers are still going strong, and while their palette has expanded over the years to touch upon hip-shakin’ classic rock, soulful country ballads, and golden oldies pop, their primary attack strategy still relies heavily on the jagged hooks and boisterous choruses of their formative years. Their fifth album Nosebleed Weekend retains all the devil-may-care magnetism and serrated instrumentation of their debut, but it flourishes with a decade’s worth of songwriting discipline and chemistry."

QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT LIVE!

SUNDAY JULY 23RD!

Quintron has been making genre-defying noise and “Swamp-Tech” dance music in New Orleans for over fifteen years. The majority of his ten full-length albums have the psychedelic soul of New Orleans garage R&B filtered through a tough distorted Hammond B-3 and a cache of self-made electronic instruments. He has also released strange soundscapes based on inner-city field recordings of frogs and neighborhood ambiance. Quintron regards his most significant creation to be his patented instrument called the DRUM BUDDY, a light activated analog synthesizer that creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns. (Notable DRUM BUDDY clients include performers Nels Cline of Wilco, Laurie Anderson, and Mr. Dibbs.)

Miss Pussycat, otherwise known as Panacea Theriac, is a New Orleans based puppeteer. Born in Antlers, Oklahoma, she began learning puppetry at the Christian Puppet Youth Ministry at the First Baptist Church of Antlers. She began her professional career in New Orleans and assisted in founding the influential night club “Pussycat Caverns.” For the past fifteen years she has traveled internationally conducting puppet shows in rock clubs and at international festivals. She is the President of Rhinestone Records and produces vinyl LPs of her puppet’s many bands. Her three full-length puppet movies, North Pole Nutrias (2002), Electric Swamp (2005), and most recently Trixie and The Treetrunks (commissioned by Vice magazine in 2007), have featured the voices of numerous New Orleans musical, political, and literary celebrities, including Sheriff Harry Lee, seafood entrepreneur Al Scramuzza, Antoinette K-Doe, and Andrei Codrescu.

SLOW SEASON (RIDING EASY RECORDS) LIVE!

THURSDAY JUNE 15TH!

Our first Riding Easy Records band is officially coming next week!!

Press “play” on Slow Season’s second full-length album MOUNTAINS [RidingEasy Records], and you might just forget what era you’re in. It could very well be the sixties, seventies, or now. It almost doesn’t matter though because this is hypnotic, heavy, and howling rock ‘n’ roll that defies both musical and temporal categorization. The Central California quintet—Daniel Rice [vocals, guitar], David Kent [guitar], Hayden Doyel [bass], and Cody Tarbell [drums]—scale new heights, while recognizing where it all began.
