ADVANCE BASE RETURNS!

SATURDAY OCTOBER 20TH!

Advance Base is new music by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone mastermind Owen Ashworth. Under his new moniker, Ashworth conjures dreamy waltzes, heavy-hearted ballads & electropop-styled torch songs from antiquated instruments such as Rhodes electric pianos, Omnichords, Wurlitzer rhythm boxes, & samplers. Advance Base songs deal with deceased racehorses, estranged siblings, hard feelings, & all things long lost. A Shut-In's Prayer, the debut album from Advance Base, was number 19 on MOJO Magazine's Best Albums of 2012 list.

The World Is In A Bad Fix Everywhere, an EP of early 20th century gospel music composed by Washington Phillips, was released June 25, 2013. The Chicago Reader included The World Is In A Bad Fix Everywhere on its Best of Chicago 2013 list. An EP of Magnetic Fields covers called Tomorrow's Homes Today was released later that year as a limited edition cassette, & went out of print almost immediately.

Advance Base released a digital mixtape of compilation tracks & rarities called Plastic Owen Band on November 3, 2014. Nephew in the Wild, a new album of original material, was released August 21, 2015 by Orindal (US/AQ) & Tomlab (EU/UK). PopMatters named Nephew in the Wild the #1 Indie Pop album of 2015

PAUL CHERRY - TENENBAUMS LIVE!

MONDAY OCTOBER 1ST!

Paul Cherewick, monikered Paul Cherry, initially came up during Chicago’s garage rock wave of 2014. In the thick of the DIY scene with up and coming bands of the time as Twin Peaks, Mild High Club and Whitney, Paul would abandon the all too familiar lofi rock sound of his first EP “on Top” and spend the next 3 years exploring the nuances of jazz and pop, finding his footing with a new sound. Paul Cherry has revamped and reinvented himself on his debut LP, Flavour. Cherry’s well crafted melodies sit at the intersection that fans of Todd Rundgren’s classic songwriting and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi dream pop can totally enjoy

THE BUTTERTONES - WILD WING LIVE!

THE BUTTERTONES - WILD WING LIVE!

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30TH!

Last year the Buttertones put out Gravedigging, but on their newest Midnight In A Moonless Dream, they’re digging deeper and discovering something dark. If Gravedigging felt like an oversaturated spaghetti-western desertscape, Midnight is much more biting—music made for the swampland that spit out Australia’s mad Scientists, or for the Mickey Spillane night city where the Cramps met all those garbagemen and werewolves. Or maybe the Buttertones are heading for an even more primal place: “Show more teeth / Bite your way in,” sings guitarist Richard Araiza. “You’re back in the jungle again!”

They’d started in 2011 as a trio of music-school misfits. Araiza, bassist Sean Redman and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Modesto ‘Cobi’ Cobiån all wanted to pursue something more than boring industry adequacy, and soon locked together their current five-piece line-up with sax player London Guzman and guitarist Dakota Boettcher. With Gravedigging, they leapt from backyard parties to back-to-back tours, including their first trip to Europe, and scored a Coachella slot for 2018. It was a year that made them sharper, stronger, even more sophisticated. And when they were ready to record, they were ready to do things differently.

Midnight was made in two flash sessions at Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio with Gravedigging producer Jonny Bell, whose genre-smashing record collection and appetite for experimentation made for a perfect match. (He’s really a guru, they say.) What was supposed to be a six song EP during the summer of 2017 bloomed into a full-length by the end of that December. Midnight was like a trust fall, the band says—leap of faith after leap of faith, cut to tape as it happened by a tight and tour-tested band. On this album, they’d decided, everything would be new—not just new sounds, like their first-ever string section, but new ways of working together and writing together. They worked on trust and instinct, by feeling instead of thinking. If it worked, they’d keep it, and if it didn’t, they’d burn it and move on. Gravedigging played like the soundtrack to a good heist movie, but Midnight was like the true story itself—a perfect and intricate crime, executed by a crew of professionals under cover of night.

On the vicious “Winks and Smiles,” the spirit of sax and violence that powered cult-classic L.A. punkers the Deadbeats suddenly comes to life; on the starked-out “You and Your Knife” and fog-and-smoke follow-up “Brickhead,” you’ll hear the cryptic echoes of Suicide or Bauhaus. It’s music made for dancers but also for doomed romancers, and you’ll hear it best on the pocket symphony “Eros,” which closes the album with Lynch-ian vision and power—here Araiza sings with almost startling passion, and if you don’t linger on the idea of graveyard angels in perpetual embrace, it’s a love song for the ages. This is the strong stuff, the kind that comes in an unmarked bottle and burns when it hits.

“It’s the darkness that brings us together,” laughs Guzman—in person, this is a band who prefer comedy to tragedy, even if they do claim to spend hours listening to Smiths records all day. But there’s still a tension and even a sinister new dimension on Midnight that the Buttertones never quite had before. Like lead single “C4,” which ignites like something from a New York no-wave song, with slashing sax and ferocious drums and a piano riff falling of a cliff before Araiza fights through the noise and gunsmoke, and what’s the very first word on the whole album? “Bang!” he shouts—and that says it all.

SEND MEDICINE - LowRidingMoths - Sydney Elaine

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26TH

SEND MEDICINE began as a solo project from Toronto based singer/songwriter Julian Hacquebard. Julian moved the project to Los Angeles, and began shaping a sound that LA RECORD called “a heady mix of psych, blues, folk and surf - a winning combination.” Since, the band has expanded to a six-piece line up, with a reputation for their deep-felt live performances featuring extensive percussion, thoughtful harmonies, and a theremin. Drawing on inspirations ranging from Jefferson Airplane, Cocteau Twins, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Britpop, T. REX and Nick Cave to name a few; the band continues to evolve in it's musical pursuits.

ESME PATTERSON LIVE!

Denver, CO’s Esmé Patterson has been making waves all around the country since going solo in 2012 (she was previously in Denver-based Paper Bird). Her voice is smooth and sweet when she wants it to be, and then fully rock and roll when you least expect it. Each of Patterson’s songs listens like and intensely personal diary entry, andy you’ll likely find yourself relating to all of them with wide-eyed wonder.

WRECKLESS ERIC RETURNS!

FRIDAY JULY 6TH!!

He won’t recreate 1978 for you, he’ll blow your mind instead.

New album Construction Time & Demolition out on April 6th

…we all thought he’d just play a few songs from his new album, “amERICa”, a few classics from his Stiff Records years, and we’d go home after hearing “Whole Wide World”. But this was not a night of an old rocker going through the motions. It was an evening of pure rock and roll; an evening of performance art with a garage-rock flavor. It was a combination of Neil Young’s “Ragged Glory” era, Wilco’s “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”, Lou Reed’s “Metal Machine Music”, and any album in the Sonic Youth catalog. Songs began with layers and layers of different frequencies of noise and ended with these sounds blending into the next tune…

MICHAEL RAULT RETURNS!!

MICHAEL RAULT RETURNS!!

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH!

MICHAEL RAULT IT'S A NEW DAY TONIGHT OUT MAY 18 ON WICK/DAPTONE

Canadian singer-songwriter Michael Rault is pleased to announce his new album and Wick Records debut (a Daptone Records subsidiary), It's A New Day Tonight, out May 18th. The new album has its home in the darkness, many of its songs looking at nocturnal activities, particularly sleep. "Sleeping and dreaming were attractive concepts," says Rault. "I was looking for an escape from a lot of frustrating and dissatisfying conditions in my day-to-day life." The Edmonton-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter-producer began working on its songs in earnest after winding down the tour supporting his 2015 full-length Living Daylight, but getting to the point of having an album was a process. "Musically it came out of a period of dissatisfaction, creatively and personally, as I found myself pushing against the limitations of my abilities and approaches to making music." But those delays eventually paid off. As he was working on Tonight's songwriting, Rault kept entering the orbit of Wayne Gordon, producer and head engineer at Brooklyn's legendary Daptone studio—first through opening stints for the late firebrand Charles Bradley, then while on tour with Aussie shredders King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Sending Gordon early sketches of some songs led to Rault heading to Daptone for what was initially going to be a two-week recording stint. Midway through that Gordon approached him about signing to the Daptone Records label's fledgling rock spinoff, Wick—and becoming the first Canadian member of the Daptone family. Signing with Wick also led to Rault finishing the record at Daptone and bringing Gordon on as co-producer. It's A New Day Tonight has the loose-limbed feel of a lost album by '70s bands that bridged the gap between folk rock's open-hearted strumming and power pop's crisp, melody-forward confections—Wings, Badfinger, Big Star, 10cc—yet possesses an energy shot through with 21st-century optimism. That vibe was assisted by the live-to-tape recording setup at Daptone. "The editing and patching together of tracks on the album was minimal compared to modern standards, which forced me to get more used to having to perform each song all the way through in the studio and then live with the imperfections afterwards," says Rault. The album's title (and title track) comes from the most Canadian of overheard sources: a pregame interview with a hockey player coming off a rocky night. "He said, 'It's a new day tonight, we've got to put the past behind us.' At first, I thought it was an awkward phrase," says Rault. "But I quickly thought: 'Awkward turn of phrase... or a good album title?' [The title track] is almost completely describing a very positive nightlife experience, but the opening line implies that this evening is coming as a major relief after spending the majority of the day depressed." It's this idea of new hope born from a period of hardship that drives the record. Hope springs eternal when day is over it's a new day tonight.

THE LITHICS LIVE AT TOTAL DRAG!

THURSDAY MAY 31ST!

Lithics is a four person minimalist punk band from Portland, Oregon formed in late 2014. Over the last year and a half they have refined a sound focusing on interlocked bass and drum rhythms paired with shrill guitar counterpoint and stark female vocals. While counting Wire, The Fall, Devo, Pylon, The Shadow Ring, and Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band as reference points, the band’s concerns are contemporary and urgent. An injection of uptight, nervous energy into the reverb drenched complacency of today’s musical underground.
